What is Literacy?
"Reading the world always precedes reading the word and implies continually reading the world...this movement from world to word and word to world is always present; even our spoken word flows from our reading of the world." "The understanding attained by a critical reading of text implies perceiving the relationship between text and context" "The teacher cannot put it together for the student; that is the student's creative task." "Words should be laden with the meaning of the people's existential experience, not the teachers experience" |
Literacy is the ability to read the world in which one lives in order to successfully communicate with and understand others.
Literacy includes any skills needed to navigate, engage, and comprehend the world in which one lives. Meaning making is developed through connections between one's world and word. The word can be in spoken, written, or visual form. Developing an individual's ability to communicate with a variety of audiences and understand the diverse forms of literacy will foster curiosity, and develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. |
